8 New Songs Out Today

Martha

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

INSANITY ALERT – “WELCOME TO HELL”

Austrian crossover thrash revivalists Insanity Alert say they’re influenced by bands like SOD, DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, and Nuclear Assault, and that should give you a very good idea of how they sound. Their first album for Season of Mist, 666-Pack, comes out January 25, and new single “Welcome to Hell” is out now. Nothing you haven’t heard before, but this kinda thing always makes for a fun adrenaline rush and Insanity Alert do it well.

ALEX CHILTON – “DON’T LET THE SUN CATCH YOU CRYING” (LOUIS JORDAN COVER)

Best known for Big Star and The Box Tops, Alex Chilton recorded all kinds of music over the years, including some jazz standards. Those jazz covers, recorded in 1990 — all very rare, unreleased and/or out of print — have been collected on a new record called Songs From Robin Hood Lane which will be out February 8 via Bar-None. The song here is not the song by Gerry & The Pacemakers, but one by Louis Jordan that was also recorded by Ray Charles.

MARTHA – “HEART IS HEALING”

UK band Martha are gearing up for a new record in 2019 and while details on that are still under wraps, they did just share new single “Heart is Healing,” which might be their shiniest bit of guitar pop yet. Say the band: “Sorry that we’ve been a bit quiet lately, we’re gonna have some news to share very soon. In the mean time we wanted to let you know that we’re officially working with Big Scary Monsters and Dirtnap and we’re incredibly chuffed about it! We also wanted to give you a present to maybe warm you up a bit – tis the season after all – so here’s a new song and a video we made to go with it. It’s called ‘Heart is Healing’. Hope you like it, but if not, don’t worry, you can always re-gift it next year. It’s better for the environment anyway.”

JULIAN LYNCH – “HEXAGONAL FIELD”

While he spends a lot of time these days as a member of Real Estate, Julian Lynch has his own music career as well and will release new album, Rat’s Spit, on January 18 via Underwater Peoples. “Hexagonal Field” is dreamy and drony with hypnotic organ pulling you through to the other side.

KEVIN DEVINE – “THE BODY OF AN AMERICAN” (THE POGUES COVER)

In conjunction with the announcement of his BrooklynVegan-presented St. Patrick’s Day shows, Kevin Devine released a cover of this Pogues classic which we wrote more about here.

GOOD FUCK (TIM KINSELLA + JENNY PULSE) – “SECRET MEETINGS”

The ridiculously prolific Tim Kinsella (Joan of Arc, Cap’n Jazz, Owls, etc) has yet another new project, Good Fuck (with his partner Jenny Pulse). “Secret Meetings” is the lead single off their self-titled debut album and we wrote more about it here.

TINY LEAVES – “CYNEFIN” (JULIANNA BARWICK REWORK)

Julianna Barwick has put her spin on the song “Cynefin” by minimalist composter Tiny Leaves, which we wrote more about here.

SUNWATCHERS – “BEAUTIFUL CRYSTALS”

Brooklyn’s improvisational psych/jazz/punk quartet Sunwatchers return with new album Illegal Moves on February 22 via Trouble in Mind. Expand your mind with the awesome “Beautiful Crystals” that goes from is krautrock wig-out to kaleidoscopic vapour trail psychedelia and back again.
