Who needs a traditional ball drop when countless rolls of toilet paper are unfurled into the crowd? Continuous streams of white tissue were one of the festive components that helped Girl Talk ring in the New Year Thursday at a sold-out Congress Theater during a feverish 110-minute concert that evolved into a sweaty rave.

Backed by an elaborate stage set that featured a large-as-life dollhouse complete with a furnished hall, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, the sample-based composer created an unbroken chain of pop mash-ups from the comfort of a laptop. The home-themed design and anything-goes atmosphere allowed Girl Talk, aka Gregg Gillis, to play host to what doubled as the world’s greatest block party. Perched behind a table, the ex-biochemist stayed in perpetual motion. [Chicago Tribune]
