Goblin @ MHOW, 10/6/2013

There are lots of bands that look frightening, but few have made such genuinely scary music as Italian prog rockers Goblin, whose scores to Dario Argento’s Profondo Rosso, Suspiria and Tenebre (not to mention George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead) can chill to the bone even without visual accompaniment. (Some of it, mind you, is just groovy/cool prog.) The band, who have disbanded and reformed a few times in the last 30 years, have been back in action since the mid-’00s, thanks in part to revived interest in their music thanks to the internet.

The band are currently on their first-ever North American tour, and made their live NYC debut last night at a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg, where they played a cross-section of their classic material against projections of creepy psychedelic imagery. As it should be. Setlist and pictures from the show — including ones of openers Secret Chiefs 3 — are in this post.

Goblin play again tonight (10/7), this time at Webster Hall (Secret Chiefs open again) and you can still get tickets. If you’re going, be on the lookout for their exclusive tour EP on colored vinyl at the merch table. More pics of Goblin’s NYC live debut below…
